Town Continues to Oppose Sales Tax Redistribution Efforts in General Assembly

The Southern Shores Council and Town staff continue working in coordination with Dare County and our neighbor Towns to oppose NC Senate Bill 369 (“The Sales Tax Fairness Act“) introduced by  NC State Senator Harry Brown, as well as Senate Bill  608 (“A Simple and Fair Formula for Sales Tax Distributions”   introduced by State Senator Bob Rucho. Each bill proposes a redistribution of sales tax collected in Dare County to other towns and counties. Either of these bills, if enacted, would have a detrimental effect on the sales tax proceeds our Town receives annually to fund our Town services. Any reduction in sales tax proceeds being currently received by the Town of Southern Shores  would have to be made up in the Town budget with an increase in the property tax rate. Change in Beach Nourishment Schedule – Nourishment of the Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores beaches is now scheduled to commence in early August. Given the haul distance from Borrow Area A to KDH is significantly shorter than the distance to KH, GLDD is strongly considering constructing KDH before they do Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores. The shorter distance is more conducive to the smaller dredges and they want to maximize their production while the Dodge and Padre are on site.
