Joaquin CAMA Emergency Permit Information

As a result of the initial reports of damage due to strong winds and high tides associated with Hurricane Joaquin, the North Carolina Secretary of Environmental Quality has issued a declaration that allows for emergency beach bulldozing for the reconstruction or repair to damaged frontal or primary dune systems until January 8, 2016.  Anyone who wishes to apply for an emergency permit to reconstruct or repair a damaged frontal or primary dune, with waived permit fees, should contact the Division of Coastal Management – CAMA Field Representative Ron Renaldi at (252) 264-3901.  The declaration also applies to structures that are located within the estuarine system or public trust Areas of Environmental Concern and were destroyed or damaged beyond 50 percent of the structure’s value.  Anyone who wishes to reconstruct or repair dune walkways, dune decks, and dune steps should contact the Town of Southern Shores Planning and Code Enforcement Department at (252) 261-2394.

Change in Beach Nourishment Schedule – Nourishment of the Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores beaches is now scheduled to commence in early August. Given the haul distance from Borrow Area A to KDH is significantly shorter than the distance to KH, GLDD is strongly considering constructing KDH before they do Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores. The shorter distance is more conducive to the smaller dredges and they want to maximize their production while the Dodge and Padre are on site.
